Prenatal Acupuncture & Obstetric Support

Nurturing the maternal-fetal environment through neuro-somatic regulation and TCM principles, managing structural shifts to ensure an optimal pregnancy and that the body is ripe and ready for labor.

While modern biology calls it a marathon, TCM views pregnancy as the ultimate cultivation of the 'Sea of Blood.' Pregnancy requires a massive recruitment of resources—blood volume, hormonal output, and structural adaptation. I act as a clinical partner to your OB or Midwife, bridging the gap between medical monitoring and physiological support to ensure you are vital, nourished, and fully prepared for the labor ahead.

Clinical Focus by Gestational Stage.

Your physiological needs shift dramatically every 12 weeks. My protocols are stage-specific to support these distinct developmental windows. Every twelve weeks, your pregnancy calls on your body for a different set of metabolic and structural tasks. At Brooklyn Qi, we meet you exactly where you are with precision-timed protocols designed to support your body's current clinical needs and developmental windows.

Regulating the Maternal-Fetal HPA Axis.

Research shows that maternal cortisol levels can cross the placenta, impacting fetal development. This is why "stress management" is not a luxury; it is a clinical necessity.

In TCM, the Heart and Uterus are connected by the Bao Mai (Uterine Vessel). When stress or maternal cortisol levels rise, this connection is disrupted. By regulating the Maternal-Fetal HPA Axis and the Vagus Nerve, we calm the maternal Shen (spirit) to ensure a peaceful intrauterine environment. This parasympathetic shift promotes vasodilation—maximizing the flow of Qi and Blood to the placenta—and primes the body for the natural release of Oxytocin required for labor.

Common Questions

Is acupuncture safe throughout pregnancy?

Yes, when performed by a licensed acupuncturist with specific obstetric training. Certain acupoints are intentionally avoided during pregnancy — particularly those with strong downward or moving actions — and treatment protocols are adapted trimester by trimester. Liz has over two decades of experience treating pregnant patients and coordinates closely with your OB or midwife.

How often should I come in during pregnancy?

For general wellness and symptom management, once every two to three weeks is typical in the first and second trimesters. In the third trimester, weekly visits are common as we shift toward labor preparation. For acute presentations — severe nausea, significant structural pain, or high stress — more frequent sessions may be recommended in the short term.

What symptoms can prenatal acupuncture help with?

First trimester: hyperemesis gravidarum (severe nausea and vomiting), fatigue, and early hormonal dysregulation. Second trimester: round ligament pain, sciatica, headaches, and anxiety. Third trimester: pubic symphysis pain, edema, insomnia, breech presentation, and labor preparation. Postpartum: depletion, lactation challenges, and C-section recovery. Each presentation is treated with stage-specific protocols.

Do you work alongside my OB or midwife?

Yes. Brooklyn Qi functions as an integrative adjunct to your existing obstetric care. We do not replace standard prenatal monitoring or medical management. Treatment notes and clinical reasoning are available to share with your provider on request, and Liz is experienced coordinating with Reproductive Endocrinologists, OBs, and midwives.
