Recovering from Cesarean requires a completely different clinical approach than recovering from a vaginal birth. Similarly, establishing lactation is a complex interplay of hormones and blood supply that often needs support.
At Brooklyn Qi, I help to move through new mom challenges like healing from your birth and assisting in lactation concerns.
C-Section Recovery
- Scar Tissue Integration: Once the incision is closed (typically 6 weeks), we use local needling and moxibustion to break up adhesions, soften the scar, and restore sensation to the "numb" areas.
- Inflammation Management: In the early weeks, we use distal points (away from the scar) to reduce systemic inflammation and manage pain without heavy reliance on opioids.
- Reconnecting the Core: In Chinese Medicine, a C-section cuts the "Dai Mai" (Girdle Vessel). We work to energetically and physically reconnect the upper and lower body.
Optimizing Supply & Flow.
Breast milk is a direct product of your body's Qi and Blood. If you are depleted from labor, or if stress is constricting flow, nursing can become a struggle.
- Low Supply: We treat this as "Blood Deficiency." By boosting your digestive efficiency and blood volume, we give your body the raw materials it needs to produce milk.
- Mastitis & Clogged Ducts: Acupuncture is highly effective at clearing heat at treating mastitis and clogged ducts.
Common Questions
When can I start C-section scar treatment?
For systemic treatment using distal points, we can begin within the first two to three weeks. For local scar treatment — needling directly around and along the incision — we wait until the incision is fully closed and cleared by your OB or midwife, typically around six weeks. Early systemic treatment in the weeks prior significantly reduces inflammation and speeds overall healing.
Can acupuncture increase low milk supply?
Yes. In TCM, breast milk is a direct product of Blood and Qi. When these are depleted from labor — particularly after a Cesarean — supply can suffer. Acupuncture works by improving digestive efficiency and blood production, giving your body the raw materials to generate milk. Most patients notice improvement within three to four sessions, particularly when combined with dietary guidance.
What is mastitis and can acupuncture treat it?
Mastitis is an infection or inflammatory condition of the breast tissue caused by milk stasis or bacterial infection. In TCM, it is treated as a heat and stagnation pattern. Acupuncture is highly effective at clearing the heat, moving the blockage, and reducing inflammation — often providing relief within one to two sessions. It is used alongside medical treatment when infection is confirmed, not as a replacement for antibiotics when they are indicated.
Can acupuncture help with a painful or numb C-section scar?
Yes. Scar tissue that forms after Cesarean can become adherent — sticking to underlying tissue layers — which causes pulling, numbness, or sensitivity. Local needling and moxibustion directly on and around the scar breaks up these adhesions, restores circulation, and often recovers sensation to areas that have been numb since surgery. This work is best started at six weeks post-surgery and continued over several sessions.
