In our modern medical system, the birthing person is often cleared at the hospital door and not seen again for six weeks. This leaves a critical gap in care during the most physiologically demanding phase of parenthood.
At Brooklyn Qi, I view the postpartum period as a time of "Deep Repletion." Whether you birthed vaginally or via Cesarean, your body has undergone a massive expenditure of Qi and Blood, and at the same time, you have a new baby to care for. My goal is to rebuild those reserves, supporting your physical recovery and regulating your nervous system so you can care for your baby from a place of fullness, not depletion.
Why You Feel Exhausted (And How We Fix It).
Postpartum fatigue is more than just sleep deprivation. It is often a clinical state of "Blood Deficiency" and "Kidney Essence Depletion."
- Blood Building: We use nutrient-dense protocols (acupuncture + dietary guidance) to boost iron levels and restore the blood volume lost during birth.
- Adrenal Restoration: We warm the metabolic fire to combat bone-deep exhaustion and night sweats.
- Hormonal Regulation: Smoothing the steep drop in estrogen and progesterone to mitigate the "baby blues" and support emotional stability.
- Postpartum Home Visits: If you like, we can do your postpartum visits in your home, where you feel most comfortable. If you prefer an office visit, baby is welcome to join us, I can sling your baby while I treat you!
A Sacred Closing.
Labor is an "opening" event. Recovery requires "closing." I utilize a traditional technique called Mother Warming—the application of warming moxibustion to the abdomen and lower back. This simple yet profound treatment encourages the uterus to contract back to size (involution) and signals to the nervous system that the marathon of birth is over. It is a moment of deep, restorative rest.
Common Questions
When can I start postpartum acupuncture?
As early as a few days after a vaginal birth, or two to three weeks after a Cesarean (for treatments that use distal points only, avoiding the incision site). The sooner we begin the repletion process, the better — the first six weeks are the most critical window for restoring blood volume and stabilizing the nervous system before the demands of new parenthood fully set in.
Do you offer home visits?
Yes. Postpartum home visits are available for patients who cannot easily leave the house in the early weeks. Liz can treat you at home, and your baby is welcome to be present — she is comfortable treating you while you nurse or even while she wears your baby in a sling. Contact the clinic to discuss availability and scheduling.
How is postpartum treatment different from prenatal treatment?
Prenatal treatment focuses on support and preparation — regulating the nervous system, managing structural pain, and preserving energy for birth. Postpartum treatment is about deep restoration. The emphasis shifts to rebuilding blood volume and iron levels lost during birth, restoring adrenal function, smoothing the hormonal transition, and addressing the specific depletion patterns that lead to postpartum fatigue, mood instability, and hair loss.
Can acupuncture help with postpartum depression or anxiety?
Yes. Postpartum mood disorders are closely linked to the steep hormonal drop following birth and the chronic sleep deprivation that follows. Acupuncture helps regulate the HPA axis and restore neurotransmitter balance — the same mechanisms that make it effective for anxiety and depression generally. It is an excellent adjunct to psychiatric care, not a replacement for it. If symptoms are severe, Liz will coordinate with or refer to your mental health provider.
