PMS & PMDD Cycle Support

Integrative solutions for PMDD, painful periods, and hormonal volatility.

For many women, the week before their period is a "blackout" window—a time of physical pain, extreme fatigue, or emotional volatility that feels out of character. If you are planning your life around your cycle to avoid conflict or pain, that is a sign of imbalance.

At Brooklyn Qi, we differentiate between common PMS and PMDD (Premenstrual Dysphoric Disorder). PMDD is not just "bad PMS"; it is a severe reaction in the brain to normal hormonal fluctuations. My treatments focus on smoothing the transition from the Luteal phase to Menstruation, regulating the liver's ability to process hormones, and calming the nervous system response.

Beyond "Cramps."

  • PMDD & Mood: Addressing the severe anxiety, depression, or rage that occurs in the luteal phase. We use points that "coursing the Liver Qi" to release emotional pressure.
  • Dysmenorrhea (Pain): Period pain that requires medication is not "normal." We increase pelvic blood flow to stop the uterine spasms that cause cramping.
  • Hormonal Migraines: Treating the specific headaches that track with your cycle (usually occurring right before the bleed or at ovulation).
  • Cycle Regularity: Helping the body re-establish a rhythm after coming off birth control.

The "General" of the Body.

In Chinese Medicine, the Liver system is responsible for the smooth flow of blood and emotions. When the Liver is "stagnant," we get PMS. Our goal is to "soothe the Liver." When energy flows freely, the period arrives without pain, and the mood remains stable.

Common Questions

What is the difference between PMS and PMDD?

PMS (premenstrual syndrome) refers to the cluster of physical and emotional symptoms — bloating, irritability, fatigue, breast tenderness — that occur in the luteal phase and resolve with menstruation. PMDD (premenstrual dysphoric disorder) is a more severe, clinically recognized condition in which the brain has an abnormally intense neurological response to normal hormonal fluctuations. PMDD involves significant mood disruption — depression, rage, anxiety, or emotional numbness — severe enough to impair daily functioning in the days before a period. Treatment protocols at Brooklyn Qi are calibrated to which pattern you are experiencing.

How many cycles of treatment does it take to see improvement?

For PMS, most patients notice meaningful improvement within 2 to 3 cycles of consistent treatment — typically 1 to 2 sessions per cycle timed to the luteal phase. PMDD generally requires a longer course, with measurable improvement over 3 to 4 cycles. The key is treatment consistency across cycles rather than single sessions timed to acute symptoms.

Can acupuncture help with period pain as well as mood symptoms?

Yes — dysmenorrhea (painful periods) and mood symptoms are often treated simultaneously, as they frequently arise from the same underlying pattern of Liver Qi stagnation and impaired pelvic blood flow. Treatment combines points to move stagnation and increase pelvic circulation with points to regulate the nervous system and smooth hormonal transitions. Many patients find that as their pain decreases, their mood symptoms improve in parallel.

My symptoms started after coming off hormonal birth control. Can acupuncture help?

Yes, and this is a very common presentation. Post-pill hormonal dysregulation — irregular cycles, heightened PMS, new-onset acne, or mood instability — reflects the body's process of re-establishing its own hormonal axis after years of suppression. Acupuncture is particularly effective at supporting this recalibration, helping the hypothalamic-pituitary-ovarian axis re-establish a consistent rhythm. Most patients see significant improvement within 3 to 6 months of regular treatment.
